Malaia—also spelled Malaya—garnet is one of the more unusual members of the garnet family. The material became known through East African gem deposits during the twentieth century after miners encountered garnets that did not fit neatly within the varieties they traditionally recognized. Its name became associated with the Swahili idea of being “out of the family,” reflecting its unusual gemological composition.
