Approaching the two-carat mark, this 1.94-carat natural Malaia Garnet from Tanzania presents a striking combination of raspberry, magenta, deep burgundy and vivid pink-red flashes.

Its unconventional fancy faceting gives the gemstone a distinctly sculptural appearance. Broad geometric facets transition into smaller angular reflections, creating dramatic contrasts between its deeper wine-colored areas and brilliant flashes of hot pink and raspberry. The result is a stone whose appearance changes considerably with movement and viewing angle.

Malaia—also spelled Malaya—garnet emerged from the gem fields of East Africa during the twentieth century. The name became associated with a Swahili expression meaning roughly “out of the family,” reflecting garnet material that did not fit neatly within the varieties traditionally recognized by miners.

That history remains appropriate today. Malaia garnets can display an unusually diverse palette encompassing peach, pink, orange, raspberry, red and purple combinations. This Tanzanian specimen falls within the raspberry-to-magenta-red range, with deeper burgundy providing contrast throughout the stone.
