A richly saturated East African gemstone, this 1.49-carat natural Malaia Garnet from Tanzania presents a commanding combination of deep crimson, burgundy and vivid red, with brilliant scarlet flashes appearing across its facets as the stone moves through the light.

The distinctive multi-sided faceted cut creates a bold geometric pattern across the face of the gemstone. Its deeper central tone provides dramatic contrast against the brighter red reflections along the crown and perimeter, giving the stone a noticeably different personality from the lighter pink and peach varieties of Malaia garnet.

Malaia—also spelled Malaya—garnet emerged from the gem fields of East Africa during the twentieth century. Its name is associated with a Swahili expression meaning roughly “out of the family,” reflecting how the material initially did not fit neatly into the garnet varieties familiar to miners at the time.

That unusual origin is fitting for a garnet known for remarkable color diversity. Malaia garnets can occur in shades ranging from peach and pink through orange, raspberry, red and purple. This Tanzanian specimen represents the deeper red side of the Malaia spectrum, offering a classic yet distinctive appearance.
