A richly colored East African gemstone with unmistakable character, this 1.40-carat natural Malaia Garnet from Tanzania displays a captivating combination of raspberry pink, magenta, burgundy and crimson-red tones.

The multi-sided faceted cut gives the stone a distinctive presence, producing vivid flashes of hot pink and red around the perimeter while deeper wine-colored reflections provide contrast through the center. Its substantial pavilion adds depth to the gemstone and allows its color to shift noticeably as it moves through different lighting and viewing angles.

Malaia—also spelled Malaya—garnet emerged from East Africa’s celebrated gem deposits in the latter half of the twentieth century. Early miners searching for established garnet varieties encountered material that didn’t fit neatly into the classifications they were accustomed to. The name became associated with the Swahili concept of being “out of the family,” an appropriate beginning for a gemstone now appreciated precisely because of its unusual range of colors.

Unlike the familiar dark-red image traditionally associated with garnet, Malaia can occur across an extraordinary spectrum of pink, peach, orange, red and purple combinations. Each stone can therefore possess a noticeably different personality.
